Packing Handmade Gourds for Export: What Buyers Should Require

Handmade gourds survive export when packing is designed for the shape, not copied from ceramic cartons. Buyers should specify packing standards in the PO, not discover them at unboxing.

Each piece needs a soft wrap that prevents abrasion between shells. Dividers matter when necks and curves nest poorly. Corner protection and a double-wall carton reduce crush risk in mixed containers. For lacquered goods, use materials that will not leave texture marks under pressure.

Moisture control is often ignored. Include desiccant appropriate to carton volume and avoid sealing damp wraps. Label cartons with orientation marks when tall vases are involved. Photograph packed cartons before sealing for the first shipment so both sides share a visual standard.

On arrival, open a sample carton before accepting the full lot into pick-face inventory. Note any finish scuffs separately from structural cracks — they point to different process fixes.

Workshop-direct suppliers who already pack for export will welcome these requirements. Vague “standard export packing” language is where claims begin.
